The nutrition bar market is constantly evolving to meet consumer demands; from types of proteins to flavors and sweeteners used. The consumer not only demands new flavors and textures, but also the type of sweeteners and nutritional profiles. AMCO Proteins’ recently analyzed over 100 nutrition bars marketed for bariatric weight loss to understand what types of proteins, flavors, sweeteners, syrups and more are being used. Dairy proteins (i.e. whey protein isolate, whey protein concentrate etc.) continue to dominate the major protein used being present in 49% of the bars analyzed. While artificial high intensity sweeteners are nearly always present in these bars with sucralose dominating at 81% usage, it’s interesting to note that nearly 2/3 of all bars contain sugar and polydextrose as well.
